Gleaning Wherever We Go

Are you looking for a unique experience to have while on vacation? If you are traveling with family and excited about agriculture and taking your taste buds on a tour through local flavors, then you’ve come to the right place. Malama Kauai’s Village Harvest Program provides a productive and immersive volunteering experience for people of all ages, so check us out!

Summer Spotlight on the Village Harvest Program:

At Village Harvest, we glean produce from private properties and farms across the island, harvesting what is left over and will go to waste. Volunteer Kauai and Village Harvest connected a family of prospective volunteers to Farmer Cody for a morning of harvesting and learning about Hawaiian agriculture.

Farmer Cody at The Farm at Hokuala has a mission of giving back to the community and educating youth on local agricultural practices. Cody had plenty of crops to donate, since the farm is in the beginning research stages.

Farmer Cody provided Carol and her family with a unique opportunity for the family to learn about native and canoe plants and their significance in Hawaiian culture. In addition to satisfying work, this group of vacationers experienced a taste of “local Kauai.”

To round out the morning of volunteering, we drove to the Kauai Branch of the Hawaii FoodBank. The donation was then distributed to food pantries across the island, to reach areas in need of fresh produce.

Want to Get Involved?

Gleaning with Village Harvest has full circle benefits for volunteers. As a volunteer you will learn how to harvest and taste local fruits and vegetables, see the abundance of produce that may otherwise go to waste, and donate the food to those in need of fresh nutrition. Giving back to the community and land can be a fun group activity and the best way to say mahalo for your time in paradise. Mahalo to Farmer Cody and to Carol and family!
